Song of the Day #66 - Spock's Beard

As I sometimes do, I let Spotify randomly play songs and Spock's Beard came up.  I have never delved deep into their discography before this.  I have heard the odd song.  But when "Submerged" randomly came up, it blew me away.  It is so good.  It's like "The Calling" by Yes.  It gets one pumped up and in a great mood.  Give it a listen.  I can't stop listening to it.

Song of the Day #65 - "My Number" - Tegan and Sara

Have always liked this song, but have been loving it more lately.  Interesting to find out in the description of the audio (read it for the first time) that Hawksley Workman produced it and the rest of The Business of Art.  It's interesting what you find out.

Song of the Day #64 - Zachary Lucky

Recently, as I sometimes do, after listening a discography playlist I let Spotify randomly play songs.  An artist by the name of Zachary Lucky came up.  Went on to listen to the rest of his music.  As I was listening to his music I noticed he mentioned Saskatchewan a bunch.  I came to realize that he is Saskatchewan's answer to Del Barber.  If any of you know who Del Barber is, you'll get it.  Honestly though, he does that style of songwriting like many artists like Del Barber.  I discovered Lucky is from Saskatoon.

Here is the song that randomly came up thanks to Spotify.  It caught my ear.  It's the title track off his 2016 record Everywhere a Man Should Be.

Song of the Day #63 - Jason Mraz

Sometimes after finishing a discography or whatever on Spotify, I just let random songs come up.  They are usually similar to the artist I just binged listened to.  I finished listening to John Mayer yesterday and I let Spotify do its thing.  "The Remedy (I Won't Worry)" by Jason Mraz came up.  I haven't heard it in a long time.  I got in the groove.  Catchy song.  So good.

Song of the #61 - Dream Theater

This is the story of my first time listening to Dream Theater.  This is before Mark gave a proper introduction to them at Covenant Bible College (CBC).  I was told about Dream Theater by Mark, but I never listened to them prior to what happens in this story.

Living at the farm with my dad, we had a computer with Windows 98se on it.  This was in the mid-200s or so.  At this time, Windows Media Player had a search function and it would bring up search results like a browser.  I never had anything to download music.  Even if LimeWire was compatible with Windows 98se, I never heard until I was at CBC.  Anyways, the interesting thing was you could download or listen to music you found in that search.  Thanks to Mark, I searched Dream Theater and I came across today's song of the day, "Octavarium."  I listened to it and it blew my mind.  24 minutes of mind blowing amazing music.  Something I'll never forget.  I even told Mark that this song blew my mind.  So good.

I owe it all to Mark for not just telling me about Dream Theater, but also getting me to dive head first into Dream Theater at CBC thus becoming a fan.  Very glad I did.  Thank you.

Song of the Day #60 - Jamie Cullum

Here is a song from one of my favourite artists Jamie Cullum.  He is an English jazz/jazz-pop pianist.  This song is entitled "The Age of Anxiety."  It is off his 2019 record "Taller."  This song is relevant today's world.  Things like getting people to subscribe to you, virtue signalers, etc..  It is one of my favourites off the album.  Taller is one of the best albums I've listened to that have been released this year.

Song of the Day #59 - Crooked Spies

Here is a song from the Calgary rock band Crooked Spies.  I seen them at Vangelis which is now being re-branded and renamed to Black Cat Pizza.  Crooked Spies are so tight.  They are very good.  This song is one of my favourites from them.  I listened all their stuff on Spotify.  I recommend checking them out.

Song of the Day #58 - Graffiti6

If you don't know who Graffiti6 is, they are a band from the United Kingdom.  I first heard of them when I heard their song "Free" on CBC Radio 2 on my morning drives to work when I worked at a tire recycler.

This version of "Over You" is a stripped down version from their 1 Mic 1 Take sessions.  The original is so good too.  But this one has this jazzy feel to it that gets you right in the feels.  It's about being over someone you were with and you're moving on.  That's the main meaning of the song.  It can also mean moving on from someone you liked because it's best.  I know that my buddy Mark will find this song appropriate in due time.

Song of the Day #57 - Jamestown Revival

Love can be a burden.  It can bring you down like a heavy load.  Jamestown Revival's song "Love is a Burden" rings true.  Love can be a real bitch.  It sucks when you try and get nothing.  It weighs you down and you seemingly can't do nothing about it.  But I am learning to not let it get me down.  Too many times it has and it is not good for me.  Enough about that.  Enjoy a great song with a great vibe.

Song of the Day #54 - Barenaked Ladies

I was looking up Barenaked Ladies songs today and I came upon "The Old Apartment" once again.  I've never really looked at the lyrics to the song.  I read them and they seemed dark.  The lyrics pulled me towards this idea of a broken relationship.  That's not the case.  It is in fact about going back to their "old apartment" "where we used to live."  He ends up breaking in to reminisce.  He recalls the "broken glass," "the crooked landing, crooked landlord;" and other disadvantages, although he feels nostalgia for those memories that are long since gone.

I bet you didn't know that the video was directed by fellow Canadian and fan Jason Priestly.

Song of the Day #53 - Tegan and Sara

Here is one of the first two singles from Tegan and Sara new forthcoming album entitled "Love You to Death."  There are some lyrics in the chorus that I just get.  If you've followed my blog and know my situation with an exfriend, you'll get the following particular lyrics from the song "Boyfriend."  The rest of the song relate to me as well, but the first two lines of the chorus especially.

That is total friendzoning.  Whenever I think about it, that's what it was.  That's why I connect with this song.

Song of the Day #51 - Joni Mitchell

I am not the biggest Joni Mitchell fan out there.  What I think of her as a person is irrelevant.  I like this version better than the original she recorded in the 60s.  I heard this song when I happened to be watching figure skating of all things.  It was this version from 2000 that was used.  Such a beautiful song when done in this way.

Proof of how powerful this version is is the scene in "Love Actually" when Emma Thompson's character receives the album "Both Sides Now" for Christmas.  That is the album this version is on.  Her character goes into her room, listens to the song than breaks down.  Powerful scene.  I only seen the clip mind you.

Here is another song I came across on one of the many folk stations of Spotify.  I'm glad I've discovered this song.  It is song damn catchy.  Curses you Greylag for making such a catchy song.  It is another new song obsession.  It is off their self-titled 2014 release Greylag.  Enjoy.
